Getting creative in 105 degree weather
I’ve had an on-again, off-again relationship with shorts over the years. There have been summers when I lived in denim cutoffs, others when I collected silky shorts in every iteration, and more recently I’ve settled into boxer shorts, longer denim shorts, taffeta and satin pairs, with a few sportier ones mixed in. This past week’s New York heat wave finally gave me a reason to rotate all of them back into the mix, and I kind of forgot how much fun they are to style. A handful of readers have been asking for a shorts roundup, so here we are.
Shorts definitely aren’t for everyone, but I wanted to put together a little styling inspiration that feels easy, slouchy, and relaxed while still looking polished. I recently went to the Brazil vs. Morocco World Cup match wearing my husband’s oversized Brazil jersey with a pair of black silk taffeta shorts. Under normal circumstances I would have reached for sandals or ballet flats, but a stadium called for sneakers—and honestly, I loved the balance of the look.
I also just got these dolphin-hem track shorts and became slightly obsessed. The fit is incredibly flattering, and the fabric has just enough structure to hold its shape without feeling stiff. I especially love a dolphin hem when the leg opening flares out just a bit into an A-line—it creates such a nice silhouette and makes the legs look longer.
This summer, we’re also seeing so many great longer-inseam shorts. The black Bermuda shorts worn by Margot Robbie seem to have completely taken over the internet, and thankfully there are plenty of equally chic options at every price point. Below are some of my favorite looks: a little sporty, a touch of color or a bold stripe, and plenty of beautiful jewelry to pull everything together.
